You can take this course, if you have a background in information systems development, business process management, software engineering, marketing, economics, strategy, human-computer interaction, organization science, or other relevant discipline and you are interested in learning about software product business and how software products can be mass-customized to streamline and add value to customers' business processes and/or enhance end-users' experiences through personalization. You should have basic knowledge of information systems development and management. In addition you benefit from taking TJTSS53 Software Product Line Engineering and Management or from having equivalent knowledge from a similar course in JYU or another university.

Sisältö:

Software product line engineering is an industrially validated methodology that software businesses can leverage to move from a service business model toward a software product business model and to develop software products and software-intensive systems faster, at lower costs, and with better quality and higher end-user satisfaction. It enables strategic reuse of requirements, features, pieces of software code, test cases, and numerous other software assets across the products in a software product line. It also facilitates the design of human-computer interfaces and highly usable software products and helps make the products within a product line look and feel similar.

Finally, it enables (1) customer organizations to improve the effectiveness of their business processes by configuring the products to the needs of specific market segments, customers, or user groups and (2) the end-users to personalize the products they use to their specific needs. As a result, it has gained increasing global attention during this decade. It has been leveraged widely in business-to-business settings (e.g., designing and selling product suites that enable entire enterprise architectures) and business-to-consumer settings (e.g., office products, platforms for cellular phones).

One of the purposes of this course is to collect experiences on a long term basis from multiple case organizations where the students (1) are or have been involved with software product line engineering and management or (2) have leveraged mass-customizable software in improving the effectiveness of business processes.

Esitiedot:

TJTSS53 Software Product Line Engineering and Management (Ohjelmistotuoteperheiden suunnittelu, hallinta, ja hyödyntäminen liiketoimintaprosessien tukena).

Opetusmuodot:Students alone or in groups suggest a research topic to the instructor and prepare short research essays about the topic. The completed essays account for 3 credit units. The best essays may later be further improved and combined with B.Sc. and/or M.Sc. thesis projects if possible. With additional work the best essays can sometimes be published even in international scientific conferences or journals. Students that have access to relevant practical cases are especially encouraged to participate in the course. The essays drawing upon case studies can be written, for example, from the viewpoints of (1) product line vendors designing software product lines and/or (2) customers using the product lines in possibly unique ways to add value to their business processes and/or (3) end-users personalizing the products (e.g., enterprise software) to their work roles and tasks or leveraging the products such as games to gain new experiences. The research essays will be considered confidential whenever necessary (e.g., to protect the interests of case organizations). Students who have no direct access to practical cases can also write essays from various viewpoints based on the available literature. It should be noted that there is not a lot of academic literature linking the software product line engineering and management paradigm with the business process management and end-user personalization viewpoints.
Suoritustavat:A written research essay that presents a theoretically and/or practically relevant problem and provides at least initial ideas for possible solutions to the problem.
Aikataulu:Feel free to contact the instructor any time. You can also inquire about possible research topics from the instructor. The research can be combined with other research projects such as B.Sc. and M.Sc. thesis projects.
