The aim of this course is to increase the intercultural knowledge and awareness of the students, and furthermore to analyze and critically discuss the main approaches in intercultural communication and related fields.

On completion of this course the student will be able to
- identify and describe the major theoretical frameworks both in cross-cultural and
intercultural communication research
- critically analyze, compare and evaluate earlier studies and research applications
- relate theoretical insights into day-to-day intercultural communication and provide
adequate analyses.

Previous studies required: Introduction to Intercultural Communication

The class includes lectures, reading assignments, and a final paper.

The final paper is a review of literature of an intercultural communication theory, or you must relate a communication theory to an intercultyural communication context. This paper must be:

1. Written in APA style (6th edition).

2. Must be between 10-15 pages in length not including references and title page. The paper does not need to have an abstract.

3. You can do this paper alone or you can work with a partner on this paper.

4. You must have your theory approved by the Professor.

5. The purpose of a review of literature is to "review" a theory. This means many things. You can review the development of a theory, you can review how scholars have studied a theory, you can topically review a theory, chronologically review a theory, etc... There are many ways to approach a review of literature. I will discuss some ways to do this in class. The thesis seminar will also discuss this. If you have questions about your structure or paper...talk to me as soon as possible.

6. The Review of Literature is due via e-mail on December 5 at 17:00.

7. The assignment is worth 200 points. 35 points for writing and APA; 10 points for structure, 55 for definition of theory based on literature, 100 points based on discussion of the status of the literature.

Day 1 - Chapters 1-2

Day 2 - Chapters 3-6

Day 3 - Chapters 7-9
