Sisältö:

This course is designed to introduce students to digitalization of services both from an academic and practice point of view.

Students need to understand the nature of service research as a discipline and current research issues and themes. A number of current research areas will be identified and representative papers examined. The topics that will be covered are: service systems, servitization, embracing digital innovation in incumbent firms, digital service systems, leveraging digital technology to advance service, and digital transformation in incumbent firms. 

The reading material and lectures will provide a basic grounding for the concepts underlying the research in the discipline, which is essential if students are to succeed in completing this course. The course will also apply the theoretical concepts in practice in order to familiarize the students with the practical problems of digitalization of services in incumbent firms.

Students who successfully complete this course

  1. Will have good knowledge and understanding of research in the area of digitalization of services;
  2. Can independently acquire knowledge and critically evaluate relevant research articles in some of the leading academic journals and conference proceedings;
  3. Can apply conceptual models and methods of service digitalization in practice.
Esitiedot:

This course assumes that you have already completed your bachelor’s studies and you are currently doing your master’s or doctoral studies.

Although not a prerequisite, this course assumes that you already have basic service science knowledge, for example as introduced in the Digital Service and Innovation Design course (TJTS566). Nevertheless, some key concepts will be covered in the introductory lectures. 

This course will use a typical master’s course format. The course consists of theoretical lectures, which are followed up by group work labs. However, it is assumed that students will participate to class discussion and prepare for each of the lectures beforehand.

Attendance is mandatory both for lectures and workhops, therefore, it is not possible to complete the course remotely.
