Contents:

The aim of this course is to introduce the physical phenomena taking place in nanoelectronic systems, and detail some of the theoretical tools for their description. In addition, the course analyzes novel concepts of some of the recently developed nanoelectronic devices, such as single-electron transistors, quantum dots, superconducting quantum bits, and nanoelectromechanical force sensors. The course also introduces some of the latest research on these topics. The course includes most of the following topics:
- 1. Brief introduction to systems studied in nanoelectronics
- 2. Semiclassical transport theory, including basics of spintronics
- 3. Scattering theory
- 4. Quantum interference effects in charge transport
- 5. Brief introduction to superconductivity, with emphasis on small systems
- 6. Noise and fluctuations
- 7. Single-electron tunnelling
- 8. Quantum dots
- 9. Superconducting tunnel junction devices
- 10. Graphene
- 11. Nanoelectromechanical systems

Prerequisites:

FYSA233-235, FYSM300 and preferably also FYST530.

Modes of study:

The course is based on the book T.T. Heikkilä: "The Physics of Nanoelectronics - Transport and Fluctuation Phenomena at Low Temperatures" (Oxford University Press, 2013). It will contain lectures, exercises and student presentations on chosen topics.

Completion mode:

Passing the course requires: (i) Carrying out a project on a given topic, involving a short report and a presentation, (ii) acting as an opponent on another project and (iii) passing a home examination at the end of the course. The course grade depends heavily on the number of solved exercise problems.

This course will be carried out together with a similar course taking place in Aalto University. The presentations will be shared between the participants of the two courses.
