Contents:

The course includes basics of bioinformatics and genomics, focusing on information that DNA sequence variation can give on selection pressures and demographic changes in wild populations. Evolutionary interesting genes will be traced through versatile studies on gene structure and function.

Learning outcomes:

After completing the course the student will be able to use basic databases of bioinformatics and genomics to study genetic variation in wild populations. The student can also trace signs of selection pressures and demographic changes in DNA sequences and study factors that have affected the evolution of of single genes at structural and functional level. He/she can also interpret his/her own findings critically and report them to others.

Prerequisites:

 EKOA501 and EKOA502 or equivalent knowledge on basic and population genetics.

Modes of study:

Demonstrations (8 h) and computer exercises, getting acquainted with literature and making own project work.
